CUL DE SAC—Nearly 100 young athletes ages seven and up, attended Rene Leveret's and Friends Pro Ball Player Training Camp at John Cooper Jose Lake Sr. Ballpark. The camp ran for two days and featured both local and international baseball professionals.
Leveret brought together local players Mark Ramirez who signed with the Marlins , Dudley Leonora who signed with the Orioles and Felix Brown who played in college, for the French national team and pro-ball in Hawaii. Also helping were Leveret's teammate Pat Daoust from Canada who catches for the Quebec Capitals in the Canadian American League, Bryan Sabatella from the United States who played against Leveret for the New Jersey Jackals and local physical therapist Kuinsy Hunt.
The pro players ran the group through two days of fielding and hitting drills as well as playing games, base running and sliding practice.
On hand for the opening ceremony were Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams and Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Affairs Patricia Lourens-Philip.
The camp ran from 9:00am to 2:00pm each day and was made possible in part by sponsors UTS, St. Maarten Carnival, Oyster Bay Resort, Windward Islands Bank, Candy Man, Windward Roads, Security Concepts & Solutions NV and Volvic Water.
At the closing Sunday Leveret promised, "this was the first camp but it will not be the last. The group which included some girls cheered. Leveret continued, "We are planning another one in November or December."
The athletes received lunch and snacks both days as well as a t-shirt.
