Dolphin Discovery
interested in setting
up Dolphinarium here
PHILIPSBURG--Dolphin Discovery, the company that operates the Dolphinarium in Anguilla, is interested in setting up a similar facility here. This intention and the request for a meeting with the Executive Council were outlined in a letter to the council by the company’s attorney dated March 24.
In anticipation of a meeting with the Executive Council, Dolphin Discovery’s attorney requested on behalf of his client detailed information regarding the steps to be taken to obtain the necessary permits for the establishment of a Dolphinarium.
The letter states that Dolphin Discovery “is seriously interested in establishing a Dolphinarium in St. Maarten and thinks it is much better accommodated to deal with the concerns within the community than Atlantida.” The latter company has expressed interest in developing a swim-with-the-dolphin facility on the island since last year.
Dolphin Discovery in its letter invited “potential critics” to stop by anytime at the Anguilla location or any of its other locations to see for themselves that “the wellbeing of the animals is guaranteed and that environmental and other standards of quality are being met.”
Dolphin Discovery operates a “swim with dolphins” facility in Anguilla, three in Mexico, and facilities in Tortola, Antigua and Hawaii, and “is ranked among the top dolphinariums in the world,” according to the letter. “As a locally based company client has gained a reputation as one the best facilities within the Eastern Caribbean.”
Dolphin Discovery “has proven over the years that it can operate a dolphinarium in a successful way, while taking care of the wellbeing of the dolphins and its visitors.” The company is an organisational member of International Marine Animal Trainers Association (IMATA) and Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA).
AMMPA is an international association representing marine life parks, aquariums, zoos, research facilities and professional organisations dedicated to the highest standards of care for marine mammals and to their conservation in the wild through public education, scientific study and wildlife presentations. In the letter it is noted that Atlantida was expelled from AMMPA in 2003.
