Task force investigating
theft of Customs guns
PHILIPSBURG--A task force involving police officers, members of the Kingdom Detective Cooperation Team RST and local police detectives has been put together to find the guns that were stolen from the Customs vaults last week.
Chief Prosecutor Taco Stein said Sunday during a telephone interview that the team was already hard at work, working around the clock to find clues to who was responsible for the theft.
He said he could not answer whether it was a statement by bandits or speculate as to whether the bandits had been aware that they were entering the Customs Office and were mainly after the weapons.
Stein said that as there had been no arrests as yet, he would not comment on the matter until investigators were able to put together the pieces of the puzzle.
The Customs Department in St. Maarten reported the theft of several weapons from its office during the early morning hours last week Wednesday.
Stein announced last week that a break-in had occurred at the Customs Main Office on Richardson Street and that some guns had been stolen during that break-in.
There is still no clear indication from local authorities as to whether the weapons were service revolvers or confiscated weapons.
