Career and study fair
opens on high note

PHILIPSBURG--The annual career and study fair opened on a high note Wednesday night with an estimated 300 students, parents and other persons visiting the Belair Community Centre to obtain information on study and career opportunities.

From the moment Education Commissioner Sarah Wescot-Williams officially declared the fair open, a steady stream of persons kept flowing in to get information.

Organising committee member Ruthline Rogers-Steba said she was pleased with the vibrant start of the annual two-day fair.

The event features more than 30 booths mounted by colleges and universities in Canada, United States, the Netherlands, Curaçao and Aruba to provide information about their programmes and entry requirements.

Representatives of St. Maarten Institute for Technology and Hospitality (SMITH), Centre for Formation and Information for the Welfare of Children SIFMA and University of St. Martin were also present to give information about what they have to offer to young people and to adults who want to upgrade themselves.

A panel discussion titled “Financing My Child’s Studies,’ which comprised representatives of several businesses and Head of the Island Education Department Quincy Harrigan, was also held to provide information to students. Represented on the panel were representatives of RBTT Bank, Fatum insurance company, FirstCaribbean International Bank (FCIB) and Ennia Insurances.

The panel also fielded questions from students. The questions ranged from the application procedures for study financing to the requirements to qualify.

Many of the businesses and universities present had written material and giveaways for students and other attendees.

The fair continues today, Thursday, November 8, from 9:00am to 1:00pm for pre-exam students and from 3:00 to 7:00pm for the public.

The fair is being held under the theme: “A Brighter Future through a Better Education.”
