Louie tells drivers
to bring in licence

PHILIPSBURG--It’s as simple and easy as just bringing in your licence to be checked by the Public Transportation Licence Control Department, Commissioner Louie Laveist said in a message to drivers Wednesday.

Speaking at the Executive Council weekly press briefing, Laveist said some drivers seem to have misunderstood that purpose of the revamping process that is ongoing. The department is being cleaned up and revamped with the installation of an automated system.

One of the reasons drivers are being called by the department is to go in to present their documents to ensure the “necessary checks and balances” are performed and irregularities are stamped out, he added.

Several drivers who have been called by the department to bring in their licences have been “complaining” to high ranking officials because they believe they are being singled out, Laveist said.

He said drivers should not feel “targeted” because the process is to ensure that the situation remains safe for all, with all drivers using the road being properly licensed.

Also, several French side residents who obtained a driver’s licence on the Dutch side are awaiting renewals but have been unable to get them because of the new regulations. Laveist said this matter has been put in the hand of Marcel Gumbs, the French side/Dutch side Liaison Officer, to work out.

Plans are still in place to issue credit card sized picture driver’s licences. The implementation is expected to start in January 2008, Laveist said.
