Laveist encourages reading: library
is the knowledge base of the nation
PHILIPSBURG--Youth & Cultural Affairs Commissioner Louie Laveist says that the institution of the library is a very useful and stimulating power and the knowledge base of the nation.
“Libraries are a source of knowledge, learning or to simply enjoy the pleasure of reading. I encourage parents and their children to attend the Children’s Book Week, which kicked off on Sunday and continues on through Saturday.”
“However, do not stop going to the library when Children’s Book Week ends. We live in a period of globalisation where changes are taking place with the speed of light. The institution of the library therefore has taken on a more important role where it concerns learning and informing oneself about these life-changing transformations.”
“Every parent should make it his or her duty to visit the library with kids at least once a week. Knowledge is power. We are a nation whose human resources are our assets and knowledge in society is essential to our nation’s continued development. I encourage members of our community to make use of this important institution,” Commissioner Laveist told the Government Information Service (GIS) on Monday.
“Libraries are key instruments for inspiring innovation and are essential to lifelong learning. They help us see new possibilities and ideas. They are also a trusted sources of information.”
Commissioner Laveist is encouraging parents to attend the storytelling festival which is part of Children’s Book Week on Wednesday, November 21 at the Cultural Centre.
He would like to express his appreciation to the staff of the library that is responsible for cataloguing and organising the collection, making every book easily accessible to all library users.
“I commend them for their contribution to building the knowledge base of present and future St. Maarteners,” Laveist concluded.
