Plans for new school
still being ironed out
PHILIPSBURG--Plans to construct a Secondary Vocational Education (SVE) school in the Cay Hill area are continuing.
Education Commissioner Sarah Wescot-Williams said the portion of the land that had been earmarked for the building has been transferred to the Island Government and the plans to construct the new school are progressing.
“It’s not only about the technical plans for the building,” she said during Wednesday’s Executive Council press briefing, explaining why the initiative is taking long to get off the ground. “You need to devise the plans depending on the type of educational system so it involves more than just the designing of the building. You need to take into consideration the types of subjects that will be taught. Considering that it’s an advanced vocational system, we need to take into consideration everything that needs to be part of an advanced vocational educational system.”
The Commissioner had said last year that NAf. 200,000 had been allocated from the harbour shares buyback funds to carry out a study for the construction of a new secondary school on the island.
Based on the study on the different possibilities for such an institution, it was agreed that NAf. 2.1 million from the Quick Win in the accord of February 12, would be put toward building another secondary school in the Cay Hill area.
