ExCo wants to switch
parking lots at PJIA

PHILIPSBURG--A shift in the parking situation at Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) should create more safety in traffic and alleviate traffic congestion at the airport. The Executive Council has sent a letter to the PJIA management requesting it to change the parking situation.

Commissioner in charge of Airport Affairs Sarah Wescot-Williams said during Wednesday’s Executive Council press briefing that government wanted the public parking area and the employee parking area to be switched.

The capacity of the two areas is more or less the same, she said. According to PJIA, the resent public parking lot has a capacity of 355 cars, while the employee parking has 315 parking spaces.

“The big difference is that employees come to the airport at a particular time and do not have to leave until the end of their respective workdays. On the other hand, the public parking has a constant stream of passengers to and from the airport and the crossing of the road,” Wescot-Williams said.

The Executive Council doesn’t see any insurmountable problems with such a shift and the Commissioner said she awaited with keen interest the response from the PJIA management.

“The letter also suggested that if management has any other proposals with respect to the parking at the airport that would lessen the risks for persons crossing the road and for traffic congestion that the crossing sometimes causes, then the Executive Council awaits these proposals,” she said.
