Number plates arrive, ready
to be picked up by Monday
PHILIPSBURG--The 2008 number plates have arrived in St. Maarten and should be ready for distribution for motorists on Monday, January 21.
The first batch of the plates was delivered to the Island Receiver’s Office on Wednesday and the other batch should be delivered sometime today, Thursday.
The Department is busy doing the necessary controls to ensure that all the numbers ordered have arrived in the correct order. This process should be completed in time for Monday.
Some 24,414 light blue plates bearing a picture of the Courthouse and an outline of the St. Maarten map were ordered.
Persons who had already made their road tax payment will be required to present all their documents before they can pick up their plates next week. In the past, some persons who had made their road tax payments early had refused to present these documents a second time. However, there will be no exceptions this year. This is being done to ensure that vehicle insurance and inspection have not expired between the time that road tax payment was made and the time that the plates are collected.
The road tax is 275 guilders for regular vehicles. The price for the regular plates has been reduced by NAf. 7.50 (from NAf. 25 to NAf. 17.50) while that for motorbikes will go down from NAf. 15 to NAf. 10. This is an additional reduction. In 2006, the cost of the plates was reduced from NAf. 42.50 to NAf. 25.
Some 9,999 M plates were ordered; 9,500 P plates; 215 “Bus” plates; 290 Taxis; 60 for tour buses; 60 G plates; 2,950 V plates; 325 Z plates; 110 E plates; 60 L plates and 850 plates for motorbikes. Some 2,500 R plates were also ordered.
Office ware supplier Fergos Paper has won the bid to supply the plates.
