Head-on collision costs
Dominican man his life

OYSTER POND--Grant Esprit (29) of Dominica lost his life on Thursday, January 17, two days before his birthday, in a very bad traffic accident on Oyster Pond Road.

Several persons were seriously injured in the head-on collision between two vehicles near Rice Hill and had to be taken to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for treatment. Esprit died on the scene.

The incident, which happened at approximately 3:15am, was the first fatal traffic accident of the year.

According to the police, Esprit lost control of his vehicle carrying French licence plate 891ZAV971 while driving on Oyster Pond Road. Police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson stated that Esprit probably had been speeding and had lost control of his car on the wet road surface. He then collided with a pickup truck with licence plate V-2270 that was travelling in the opposite direction.

In the collision, Esprit’s upper body hit the steering wheel of his car, after which he lost consciousness. His passenger E.D. of Guadeloupe suffered multiple cuts and bruises to his chin and lower lip.

J.E.W, the driver of the pickup truck, sustained a large gaping wound to his right knee and complained of severe chest pain.

While paramedics were attending to Esprit, who was still in his car, they saw that he was not giving any signs of life anymore and they requested a doctor to come to the scene. However, on arrival Dr. Michael Mercuur could not do anything other than pronounce the victim dead as result of the injuries he had received.

Esprit’s remains were transported to a morgue.

The other two victims were transported by ambulance to SMMC for further medical treatment. The driver of the pickup was admitted to the hospital. E.D. was sent home after treatment.
