Rafter wetting for new
govt building postponed
PHILIPSBURG--“Technical” issues have resulted in the postponement of the scheduled rafter wetting ceremony of the new government administration building being constructed on Pond Island, Commissioner Louie Laveist said.
He dismissed rumours that some sort of disagreement regarding financing for the ceremony had resulted in the postponement, which was scheduled for this week. “It has to do with technical aspects that have to be considered. We found it better to postpone the rafter wetting,” he said Wednesday.
The new building will house all government executive offices as well as the offices for ministers once country status is attained. All government departments except Public Works, Island Receiver’s Office, Ambulance and Fire Department, Police, Prosecutor’s Office, Prison and other soon to be taken over Federal Government Departments will be housed in the new building.
These departments are considered to be adequately housed in their current and projected locations. The fire and ambulance departments will soon be headquartered in a building to be constructed in Cay Hill.
