I Can Home rebuilding
set to start February 18

DUTCH QUARTER--“It’s time to start the rebuilding,” Cassandra Gibbs of I Can Foundation told The Daily Herald Monday. February 18 is the beginning date for the rebuilding of the foster home that was razed by fire on August 1, 2007 leaving 24 children temporarily homeless.

Last year, the Dutch Quarter lot was cleared of the remaining old foundation and other debris in preparation for a speedy rebuilding. However, some hiccups, including questions about whether Gibbs was the rightful owner of the land, had stalled the process a bit.

With this issue out of the way, Gibbs received the building permit and is now eager to start the reconstruction to make the children, who are now housed in a three-bedroom house, more comfortable. The temporarily home is located at a short distance from the old foster home.

Gibbs said more donations are needed to complete the project and called on everyone who pledged labour, materials and expertise after the fire to indicate whether they are still interested in the project. “February 18 is the day. We have to get started somewhere and we are going to now.”
