Constitutional Culture Club
wants to revive old-time sports

~Planning traditional sports day ~

PHILIPSBURG--Reviving old-time sports in an effort to edify students culturally is one of the main goals of the grand Sports Day being organised by the group of motivated students who are part of the Constitutional Cultural Club (CCC).

The group, which comprises students of the various secondary schools, believes that many of the island’s traditional sports are dying and want to hold a traditional sports day to edify the upcoming generation about these sporting activities in a fun and exciting setting.

The Sports Day is tentatively scheduled for June 25 at Raoul Illidge Sports Complex. The intention is to involve all the schools on the island.

In preparation for the event, CCC Director Dorothy Lake and CCC members met with some members of the community to share their idea about the initiative and to get ideas on how it can be executed optimally, and to also get some ideas about traditional sports that can be held on that day.

The revival of traditional sports is part of the group’s goal to help edify the youths about the island’s culture especially seeing that St. Maarten is headed into a new constitutional status.

Thursday’s talks were preliminary and the final details are still to be ironed out.

This is the first time the group is embarking on such an initiative. Participants of the meeting were Withfield Vlaun, Lydia Arnell, Elmora Aventurin-Pantophlet, A. Arrundell and Jocelyn Arndell.
