Spirit Air operating
only one flight a week
PHILIPSBURG—Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines reduced its three weekly flights to only one in January. Only the Sunday flight remains in service. The Friday and Saturday flights are expected to resume later this year.
Flights out of Fort Lauderdale depend on seasonal travellers and with demand now low, the schedule was revised, said Juan Arbelaez, Director of Communications and Community Affairs Latin America for Spirit.
Spirit’s inaugural flight here was on April 20, 2007. There were hopes that the airline would move to daily flights, as attracting a low-cost carrier was a long-time goal of the Island Government.
News of Spirit’s reduced schedule was met was speculation in the community that it was linked to the skyrocketing airport fee at Princess Juliana International Airport. However, Arbelaez maintained that the move had to do with the flights’ load factor.
