Airport closed
for fourth night

AIRPORT--Flights into and out of Princess Juliana International Airport are suspended for a fourth night as the technical crew tests the runway edge lights that went out Saturday because of a damaged cable.

In a statement issued Tuesday evening, airport management said that although the lights had been repaired by technicians around 4:30am, shortly before the start of operations, there had not been sufficient time to test the system properly. Therefore, for safety reasons, it was decided to keep the runway closed to night operations.

The tests were slated to be completed yesterday evening to allow for the resumption of normal night operations as soon as possible.

Passengers have had to endure lengthy delays or flight cancellations since Saturday if they were booked for any flights after dusk. Some flights were diverted to other regional airports.
