St. Maarten Cable TV, ECC staff
enlightened about HIV/AIDS

PHILIPSBURG--St. Maarten Cable TV and East Caribbean Cellular (ECC) staff are now more knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS after taking part in a workshop facilitated by the HIV/AIDS Programme Management Team (PMT) on Wednesday.

PMT representative Dr. Cornelius de Weever fielded many questions from the participants about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS.

St. Maarten Cable TV Station Manager Davey Woods told participants that it was imperative that they know the facts about HIV and AIDS instead of getting information on the road.

“HIV/AIDS pertains to all of our health as it can affect anyone of us including a family member or a co-worker, so I thought it would have been a good idea for us to get together as a group (to get more information about HIV/AIDS),” Woods told the workers.

The workers were shown a power point presentation on the effects of the various sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS on the body along with pictures of what the diseases look like, the symptoms, prevention tips and possible treatments.

They were also given a demonstration on how to properly put on a latex condom, which when used properly can prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. At the end of the session, a brief interview with a person living with HIV/AIDS in St. Maarten was shown. The interviewee spoke about how he was diagnosed and about living with HIV/AIDS.
