Number plates not purchased
by this weekend will be resold
PHILIPSBURG--The Island Receiver’s Office will start selling the new 2008 number plates bearing numbers already allocated to vehicle owners who have not paid for them by this weekend, Department Head Sherry Hazel told The Daily Herald Monday.
Hazel said the Department could sell the plates once the deadline has passed and would do so if necessary. Persons who have been allocated numbers in previous years, but have not yet paid their road tax for this year should do so by this weekend or stand to lose their plates.
The deadline for purchasing the 2008 plates is Thursday, February 28, it was announced earlier.
Hazel said, over the past days there have not been any queues at the department, so motorists could feel free to go in to pay for their road tax and purchase their number plates. “The lines are practically empty at the department,” Hazel said in a telephone interview. She noted that the department will open late to accommodate the public if necessary.
In the meantime, she dispelled reports that there was a shortage of R plates for rental vehicles saying the department has brought in additional R plates this year.
A total of 24,414 light-blue plates bearing a picture of the Courthouse and an outline of the St. Maarten map have been ordered. The road tax is 275 guilders for regular vehicles.
The price for the regular plates has been reduced by NAf 7.50 (from NAf. 25 to NAf. 17.50) while that for motorbikes has been reduced from NAf. 15 to NAf. 10. A total of 9,999 M plates were ordered; 9,500 P plates; 215 ‘Bus’ plates; 290 Taxis; 60 for tour busses; 60 G plates; 2,950 V plates; 325 Z plates; 110 E plates; 60 L plates and 850 plates for motorbikes. Some 2,500 R plates were also ordered.
