Gypsy taxi driver strikes
woman after fare dispute

MAHO--A woman was assaulted following a fare dispute with a “gypsy” taxi driver in Simpson Bay last week Monday.

The victim, an American woman, told The Daily Herald that the gypsy driver (illegal transportation provider) had slapped her after a verbal falling out between the two over the cost of a trip from Beacon Hill to a restaurant in Simpson Bay. “I know how much regular taxis charge,” said the woman, who has lived here for five years now. “I told him, ‘No, man, I’m not going to give you US $20.’”

She said she handed the driver $10 and he expressed his displeasure by striking her over the head. The blow was not very severe, but according to the woman, “I did have a headache.”

She visited the police two days later and reported the assault. She told the officers the man had been driving a vehicle with French licence plates and had tried to rip her off. According to her, bystanders stepped in and warded off further attacks from the man.

The woman gave the driver’s licence plate number to the police and told this newspaper the officers had been very prompt in their responses.
