Baggage screening runs
into snag at PJI Airport
AIRPORT--The operations of Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) were affected yesterday afternoon due to a server problem with the X-ray machine of the hold baggage screening system.
The system started to malfunction on Sunday, some of the airlines indicated to The Daily Herald.
PJIA director of operations Larry Donker stated in a press release, “To ensure the execution of the security screening of all hold baggage in accordance with national and international safety requirements, our contingency plan was activated at approximately 1:00pm” Monday.
The technical department in cooperation with the maintenance provider of the hold baggage system was working to resolve the problem, he said. “We regret the occurrence of the malfunction and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
The screening system at the entrance for personnel working at the airport was used to screen all the baggage. Baggage handlers had to carry all the baggage to the X-ray machine by hand and handcarts for screening.
The PJIA press release did not say whether flights had been delayed due to the problem with the X-ray machine.
