‘Summer Push’ planned
with American Airlines

PHILIPSBURG--In an effort to allure more North American tourists to St. Maarten in the summer months, the local government is poised to shell out US $350,000 for a joint marketing campaign, starting May 1, with American Airlines (AA).

Tourism Commissioner Roy Marlin said at Wednesday’s Executive Council Press Briefing that the funds will be dispersed as soon as the Executive Council gives its stamp of approval.

A “Summer Push” was all but ruled out late last year when the French side pulled out of the joint tourist office in New York and left a gap when it also withdrew from the public relations firm. This left the Dutch side doubtful about being able to carry out an intense campaign for summer.

Asked if the French side is back on track with the joint promotion of the island, Marlin said it is awaiting word on the status of the northern side’s tourism budget and when promotions of the island as one destination, two experiences can resume.
