Stein: Marcel Loor to be
taken off Police Force
~ Could lose good behaviour sentence reduction ~
PHILIPSBURG--Former police commissioner Marcel Loor has just about two more months in prison before he becomes a free man again, but he will be returning to the outside without a job on the Police Force.
Windward Islands Chief Prosecutor Taco Stein confirmed that the former head of Immigration would be removed from the Police Force officially in a non-reversible and undisputable ministerial decree once he was released from the Pointe Blanche prison.
Loor is serving what could be the last two months of an originally four-year sentence that was handed down in December and cut in half last week Thursday. The original sentence of the Court of First Instance was annulled, leaving Loor with 24 months, six of which were suspended, and a fine of NAf. 15,000.
Stein said Loor, who had been caught with a cell phone in his jail cell, could also risk losing the good behaviour sentence reduction that helped shorten an 18-month conviction to 12. “We would not revoke it for a minor offence (like having a cell phone), but we could if, say, he got in a fight with another inmate,” Stein said. Having a phone in one’s cell technically is not a crime.
Former Windward Islands Police commissioner and head of Immigration Loor was charged for forging Immigration documents over a five-year period, but charges of bribery were deemed legally inadmissible and revoked during the appeal.
Loor was the first top-ranking police officer arrested on suspicion of Immigration fraud. His ex-boss former Windward Islands Police Chief Commissioner Derrick Holiday was arrested in February and Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) Head of Immigration Alfred Marsdin was arrested last month.
Holiday is expected in court on April 16, eight days from today.
