Stein: Crofty bomber
arrested, confesses
PHILIPSBURG--Authorities have arrested the young man responsible for tossing a homemade bomb at a visiting sports delegation two weeks ago, leaving two coaches slightly injured, Windward Islands Chief Prosecutor Taco Stein has confirmed.
The young man confessed to making the “crofty bomb” – an easily assembled mixture of highly reactive chemicals in a plastic container – and throwing it at members of a Bonaire delegation who were staying at Rupert I. Maynard Youth Centre for the Dutch Caribbean games recently. The injuries to the victims were not severe.
The young bomb-maker could be tried for attempted murder, as the reaction of a crofty is very unstable, highly unpredictable and, as in cases around the world, potentially fatal.
One week before the incident, police spokesman Chief Inspector Johan “Janchi” Leonard had warned young people involved in making crofties to stop at the risk of seriously hurting themselves or others.
