Stabbing victim
left for dead

~ Police arrest suspect leaving hospital ~

PHILIPSBURG--A man was found clinging to life late Saturday after being viciously stabbed outside the St. Maarten Festival Village and left on the street, the police reported Sunday.

One man has been arrested for inflicting the “two very serious stab wounds” to the chest of a victim identified only as J.J.M. after the Last Lap Jump-Up at close to midnight that sent the victim to the Emergency Room at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC), police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson wrote in his statement to the local media.

Passers-by took M. off the street and rushed him to Madame Estate where paramedics met them and took the victim to the hospital. He needed an immediate operation to save his life, Henson said. “The doctor at the medical centre who attended to the victim stated that the victim was in a life threatening situation and had to be operated on. After the operation, the victim was admitted to the medical centre for observation.”

The suspect, identified as K.J.W., was arrested outside the hospital when an eyewitness pointed him out as the stabber. He had just finished receiving treatment for wounds he had received during the altercation, Henson said.

Police confiscated several weapons, including a machete, three knives, two pairs of scissors, a meat cleaver and brass knuckles during the jump-up that saw more than a dozen fights during and after the street jam and led to almost 20 arrests (see related story).
